Is NVCS right for my child?
The PA Coalition of Charter Schools recently released an "Innovation Spotlight" article about NVCS. This highlights our environmental education program. Please read: pacharters.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Innovation-Spotlight_Nittany-Valley.pdf
We think NVCS is a fabulous school. If you are a parent, then you know your child best. Below are a few common questions we get when prospective parents tour our school, and few facts that separate us from a traditional public school.
1. Our students go outside for a total of 45 minutes of recess every day, in all weather conditions. Including field trips, our calculated average time spent outside every week is 11.83 hours!
2. SCASD does not provide our school with lunches so our students must pack a lunch. We do have multiple microwaves available for them to use to be able to heat something up. We also have white and chocolate milk from a local dairy available for $.50 a carton. We also offer Papa John's pizza on Mondays for $1.00 a slice!
3. We go on an all school environmental field trip every Friday. When it becomes too cold we do an all school enrichment activity instead that changes year to year. Here is a link to an article about our on-going environmental project: Helping Earth Field Project
4. We encourage out parents to volunteer at our school. Parents must agree to complete 20 hours of volunteer time per year, per student. Volunteer opportunities are made available throughout the year.
5. Transportation is available for most students to Nittany Valley Charter School by their local school district.
6. Are we concerned about our low Student Performance Profile (SPP) score? Yes, and no. Yes, we are concerned about students who have low individual scores on the Pennsylvania State Standardized Assessments and are working hard to increase their skills to succeed on these tests. No, we are not concerned about the average SPP score for our school because our population is too small to consider this data statistically significant.
